Grave Hunter Ticker
Montgomery Cemetery
This is a overall look at the cemetery
This is Montgomery Cemetery , it is located on the property of the St. Louis Regional Airport and I would like to think Randy for been patient with me while I transcribed these cemeteries on the Airports property. This is an old cemetery and the last time it was used was 2000. The rest of the graves are pretty old. There is a lot of Family sections in this cemetery. The main families is the Montgomerys . The Belks and Montgomerys married into each others families. Just by reading the stones they tell the story of some of these families buried here. The Montgomery family has a sad story. James Montgomery died Mar 17, 1873 at the age of 43, two of his children Nancy 9 and Grace 6 also died March 21, 1873. Was there a sickness that took them or was it an accident? Then their son Samuel left this world June 9, 1877 at the age of 20 years old. Their was also Sarah Ann who passed ?- 22, 185- something, 2 years old. That leaves Elizabeth the wife and mother. She died May 23, 1892 she passed away at 61. Was there other children that lived and moved on or was she left alone with a broken heart. Another sad story is that of Elizabeth Ada Woods and her baby girl. Elizabeth gave birth to her daughter on Sept. 13, 1881 and she left her baby and husband on Sept. 14, 1881 at the age of 21. They named the little girl after her mother but she also left this world to be with her mother less than a month later on Oct. 11, 1881. Lonzo J. Wood must of moved on because his grave is not there beside them. This cemetery also has many Veterans of different wars and even the war between the states. All these old cemeteries have a story if you care to look, it is like a big open history book.

Up date on Elizabeth Ada Woods, her husband, Lonzo J. Woods has been found. Not far away, He is in the Moro cemetery buried next to his second wife Amy Jane Handlon. Lonzo was born March 1, 1856 and he died Sept. 13, 1935 at the age of 79. The 13th of September was his daughter Elizabeth's birthday. His second wife Amy was born Dec. 31, 1865 and she passed away April 5, 1914 at the age of 48. I also found out Elizabeth's maiden name and it is Montgomery. She was the daughter of James Montgomery and Elizabeth June McKittrick. This information was found at the Public library in Wood River IL. The Wood River library has a wonderful genealogy department. The librarians are very helpful and a joy to work with.

Susa Montgomery

William Montgomery was Born November 20, 1786 in Kentucky. He traveled to the St. Louis area and met Sarah Rattan. They were married on December 23, 1814 by Rev. William Jones. They built one of the first brick houses in Illinois, it was a grand two story home that they raised their 12 children in. William was a very prominent man in the county. It is said that Abraham Lincoln stayed there when he traveled between Springfield and St. Louis. Mo. Sarah passed away March 4, 1847 and according to the 1850 census William was 62 years old - widowed - and his death is listed as unknown, he passed away October 10, 1849, he was a farmer. What I think is neat, is that I once got to go inside the Montgomery home. This Gentleman by the name of Lynn lived in the old home. Not sure if the house is still standing or not. Lynn said that the house was owned by the Airport and when he passed that it would be torn down. They have the area fenced off, so I know Lynn passed away. He told us a little history about the place and I wish now that I had wrote it down. Lynn did tell us about a storm that damaged the 2nd floor of the house and it was removed. He would carry around his Metal detector and he showed us some of the items that he found in the yard . One of the items was a old Lincoln and Douglas debate button, he also found some old coins. He told us that Lincoln stayed there when he passed through the area. When Lynn lived there it had no indoor plumbing, he had a outhouse and he would carry in water from the well. I ask him why he never put plumbing in and he said they did not need it. The house did have electricity for his lights and he heated it with coal or wood in the wood burning stove. The fire place was boarded up he said it was to drafty, My favorite was when he told us that spirits would visit from time to time. I should of known the old house was connected to the cemetery but I did not ask if the old house was still standing.
