The Evangelical Bott Cemetery Est. 1858
This cemetery is located in Brighton Illinois in Jersey county. This is a very nice little cemetery. I found this cemetery when I was looking for a small family plot which I never did find. A lot of the residents of this little cemetery is German. Most of the cemeteries that I visited this weekend were German settlers. Out of all the German cemeteries this is the best kept one the other three was forgotten some time ago. This cemetery was walked on October 11, 2003 by Keith and Teresa Maddox.






This is what the cemetery looks like today. There is a few graver markers that are broke but considering how old some of the markers are I guess that is expected. This cemetery has been taken good care of and kept up. Most of the grave markers are easy to read.

Evangelical Bott Cemetery
This cemetery was started when Martin & Mary Bott who already had three sons, John, George, and Henry and then they finally got the little girl they had been praying for, Mary.  Mary came down with whooping Cough at the age of four and died.  Her mother who was heart broken wanted her buried on the only hill in the area so as she could look out her window and see her grave.  As other deaths occurred in the neighborhood they asked if they could bury their loved ones there also which was granted. 
Mary's grave site is close to the flag pole that was put there by the local Legion Post of Brighton.  There are also two sets of twins and a set of triplets buried in that area.

Martin & Mary's grave stone is in the shape of a tree as Martin wanted something like that as a reminder of the woods of Germany. 
The descendants of Martin and Mary took care of the cemetery for many years with fund raises and volunteer work on the land.  When it became necessary due to getting older they turned it over to St. John's United Church of Christ in Brighton to take care of which they do to this day.
